HIDA visualized data to allow people to experience data science with their senses. The goal was to use the images to create access to modern, data-driven research. The artworks shown here were created by the designer Michael Schmitz based on actual data sets provided by PhD researchers at the six Helmholtz Data Science Schools. On our website, we use many of the images that resulted from this project.

The expertise of our doctoral researcher Laura Helleckes and her colleague Michael Osthege from IBG-1 enables them not only to evaluate microbial growth, but also to predict epidemiological data, more precisely the reproduction number of the Covid-19 spread. On their website https://rtlive.de, they now provide daily analyses of the German R-value.

Many patients who have nasal surgery do so in the hope of being able to breathe better. But the results are often disappointing due to a lack of knowledge about how air flows through the nose. At HDS-LEE, Mario Rüttgers is now applying data science methods to reveal the small hurricanes that occur in the nose when we inhale. He wants to use these insights to help make future nasal surgeries more successful.

Christian Gerloff completed his degree in electrical engineering. Now, he’s tracking down signals from one of the most mysterious and complex systems in existence. As a doctoral candidate at our graduate school, Gerloff conducts research that unravels more hidden secrets of the human brain—thanks to data science methods.
