Congratulations to Moein E. Samadi on a Successful PhD Defense!

We are proud to share that HDS-LEE | Helmholtz School for Data Science in Life, Earth and Energy doctoral researcher Moein E. Samadi has successfully defended his PhD at RWTH Aachen University!
Supervised by Prof. Andreas Schuppert (1st PI) and Prof. Alexander Mitsos (2nd PI), his dissertation titled "Uncertainty Quantification of Binary Hybrid Models in Life Sciences" delivers impactful contributions to the development of trustworthy AI in healthcare
As clinical data often comes in sparse, binary form (e.g., presence or absence of a diagnosis), integrating such data into hybrid modeling frameworks is a key challenge. Moein's work addresses these through:
- DICE – a novel learning algorithm for binary hybrid models, enabling efficient uncertainty quantification and guiding active data collection in high-dimensional binary spaces
- A multi-hospital modeling framework for interpretable and generalizable ICU mortality prediction
- NoiseCut – an open-source Python package for robust, noise-tolerant learning from binary-encoded clinical data
These innovations bring us closer to transparent, reliable, and explainable AI in life sciences.
Warmest congratulations to Moein on this outstanding scientific achievement — and best wishes for the journey ahead!
